I HAVE DREAMS

Dr. Zainul Husain

I have dreams, but I could never bring them to life.

For the very earth that once witnessed their flaunting stride

Was rendered entirely barren by those who were once their own.

I have beheld the prettiest faces, but never held them in my gaze.

First, they made lovers; then turned them into slaves,

Haunted their memories by the pain of their heartless tales.

I have watched the sands of time slipping through my clenched fist.

Despite my desperate attempts to halt their flow,

They continued to seep through my fingers.

Life remained on the journey, getting jolts,

And the brief moments of respite that came my way

Were lost before they could be savored."

TREACHEROUS BUTTERFLIES

Being treacherous butterflies of multitude colors,

They came stealthily to steal

The pollen of my faith.

They robbed me of my body and soul,

Swearing madly, they captivated my innocent heart.

Under the trap of those pretended promises,

They made my life colorless.

They sucked the nectar of my youth

To the last drop,

And filled it with tears, sighs, and moans.

A MERMAID IN LOVE

Being a mermaid, I'll live

In the ocean of your love.

Let the earth revolve

At its desired pace.

Let time fly

In years, centuries, millennium, or above.

Here on the beach,

My eyes will wait

For your cherubic smile and saintly grace.

Love lives when everything dies,

The only truth

In the world of lies.

Lovers will swear

In the name of our love,

The only medicine

For their throbbing hearts,

An immortal tale

Of a lover and his mermaid.

YOU RETURN LIKE AUTUMN

Lush green leaves don't delight me.

The colors of spring don't mesmerize me.

I breathe heavily,

With my back against a withered tree,

With one hope: of eternal ecstasy.

When you return, like autumn, my love!

My heart begins to croon

Like a cheerful dove.

I fall into your arms

To become one whole,

Soothing and solacing

My restless soul.
