Poems of Dr. Omatee Ann Marie Hansraj (Trinidad and Tobago)

Whispers of the Wind

The wind hums soft, a fleeting song,

A melody that won’t stay long.

It dances high, it dips so low,

Through golden fields where wildflowers grow.

It whispers secrets to the trees,

Sways the rivers, stirs the seas.

A wanderer with endless flight,

Chasing dawn and kissing night.

It carries dreams, it carries fears,

Echoes laughter, dries the tears.

A voice unseen, yet always near—

A ghostly touch, so faint, so clear.

So let it brush against your skin,

Let it call you out and in.

For in its breath, both fierce and free,

Lives the song of destiny.

Whispers of the Soul

There are echoes in my chest,

soft and broken, like shattered glass

swept into corners where no light reaches,

where silence hums its lonely tune.

I have loved and lost in quiet ways,

in sighs left hanging between words,

in the weight of unsent letters,

and the way your name still lingers

on the edge of my breath.

I carry ghosts in my ribcage,

memories folded like fragile paper cranes,

each crease a moment I cannot forget,

each wing a whisper of what was.

Some nights, the stars feel heavy,

as if they, too, have known longing,

as if they, too, have waited

for something that never came.

And yet, I wake,

with hope sewn into my skin,

with love still aching in my bones,

with a heart that refuses to surrender

to the silence.

The Weight of Wisdom

Intelligence, a guiding light,

A torch burning fierce and bright.

It shapes our path, unlocks the door,

To knowledge vast, to wisdom's core.

Yet, in its glow, a shadow falls,

A burden great when pride enthralls.

For cunning minds may rise too high,

And in their fall, their echoes cry.

Use it wisely, heed its call,

Lend your mind but give your all.

A gift, a curse—it's yours to steer,

Through truth, through love, through light sincere.
