Poem - When I Die, Poet - Damburudhra Behera

When I Die
Damburudhra Behera
Odisha , India

When I am gone,
bury me in the earth,
or burn me in fire,
or lay me in a grave and pray—
I do not object.
I ask only one final thing:
when my body turns to dust,
upon that silent ash
plant a single seed.
From my place,
let a tree grow.
The world will admire and say,
“How beautiful this tree is.”
And will your heart not whisper
that once again
I can always see you,
smile at you,
and through your eyes
see the beloved
of my love?
